DFM

Design for manufacturing

Definition

DFM is the practice of shaping a part so it can be made reliably and economically with the intended process. It covers choices such as wall thickness, draft, tool access, bend radii, hole sizes, and tolerances the supplier can actually hold.

Also known as: design for manufacturing, design for manufacturability, DFMA

DFM depends on the process#

There is no general DFM checklist that fits every part, because each process has different constraints.

  • Injection molding: the Protolabs molding guide lists wall thickness, draft, ribs, bosses, gates, material, surface finish, and ejection as early decisions. It gives 1 to 2 degrees of draft as a common starting point, with more for textured surfaces.
  • CNC machining: internal corners need radii the cutter can reach, deep narrow pockets need long tools, and every setup adds cost.
  • Sheet metal: the part has to unfold into a flat blank. Bend radius, material thickness, and K-factor decide the flat pattern, and features too close to a bend distort when it is formed.
  • 3D printing: overhangs, minimum wall thickness, support removal, and print orientation matter more than tool access.

DFM in CAD#

CAD tools help by building process rules into the modeling environment. Sheet metal modes, such as Onshape's sheet metal model, keep a flat pattern and bend table updated as the folded part changes. Draft analysis shows faces that will not release from a mold. CAM simulation shows where a tool cannot reach.

These checks do not replace a conversation with the supplier. Shops have their own machines, tooling, and preferred tolerances, and early supplier feedback usually saves more time than any automated check.

DFM and AI-generated geometry#

Most text-to-CAD tools produce a nominal shape without a manufacturing process in mind. A generated enclosure may have no draft, uniform sharp corners, or walls that are too thin to mold. AI output should be treated as a first draft that still needs a DFM review for the process it will actually go through.
